Let it Ride

Let it ride is a card game where each player makes three bets equal in value, after which players are dealt three cards each, while two other cards are placed separately face down.

Players have the option of taking back one of their bets or to “let it ride”. The dealer then turn one of the cards face up. At this point, each of the players has the option to make another set of bets or “let it ride”. A player may leave his bet in or take it out again. The second community card then is flipped and players are paid according to pay tables, and each pay table has a different maximum payout. A player should only bet an amount that is equal to or less than the maximum payout divided by 3000.
With three cards, a player should let it ride if he has any of the following in his hands:

  • 10’s or higher, three of a kind
  • Any three to a royal flush
  • Three consecutive cards in three suits except 2-3-4 and ace-2-3
  • Three to a straight flush, spread of 4, with one high card at least (ten or greater)
  • Three to a straight flush, spread of 5, with at least two high cards

With four cards, a player should let it ride only if he has:

  • Any paying hand (tens or better, two pair, three of a kind)
  • Any four to a flush
  • Any four to a royal flush
  • Any four to a straight flush
  • Any four to an outside straight with one high card at least
  • Any four to an outside straight with no high cards
  • Any four to an inside straight with 4 high cards

An inside straight is where an ‘inside’ card is missing such as 4,5,7,8. An outside straight is where an outside card is missing such as 4,5,6,7. Outside straights are said to be better than an inside straight because eight cards can complete it, unlike in an inside straight where four cards can complete it. Spread 4 means the cards in span 4 values in a row like a 5,6,8. Spread 5 means the cards span 5 values in a row like a 5,7,9.

Some casinos allow a $1 side bet on which players receive an additional payoff on certain paying hands. This side bet should actually be avoided. Based on a sampling of Las Vegas and Laughlin casinos, the house edge actually varies from 13.77% to 36.52%.
