Three Card Poker

Three-card poker or tricard poker is not strictly poker, but it is a poker-based game that is being played in casinos. It consists of two separate games: pairplus and ante-and-play. At a casino, the players can play one of the games, or both.

Three-card poker is actually the American version of the British game Brag, which is a three hundred year-old card game that uses only three cards for betting.

In pairplus, a simple bet is made on the cards with a payout for all hands consisting of a pair or better. With only three cards in pairplus, there are different combinations of different hands, and there are different percentages on their probabilities too. Hand Combinations Percentage

Straight flush 48 0.22%

Three of a kind 52 0.24%

Straight 720 3.26%

Flush 1096 4.96%

Pair 3744 16.94%

High card 9720 43.98%
In ante-and-play, a player places an ante bet before he receives his cards. After being dealt his cards and seeing them, the player can opt to fold his cards and lose his ante bet. But he can also raise by placing a bet equal to the amount of money on his ante bet. There are three distinct possibilities if a player chooses to play. The first possibility is that the dealer does not ‘qualify’ on his hands. The dealer must have a hand of a queen high or higher to qualify in ante-and-play.

If the dealer does not qualify, a player is paid even money on his ante, but the play bet is returned. If the dealer qualifies, the player wins if he has a hand with a higher value than the dealer’s hand. In this case, a player gets paid even money on his ante and bets.

However, if the dealer has a hand higher in value than that of player’s, the dealer takes the ante and the bets. There are different rules for in case the value of the dealer’s hands and that of the player’s are equal in value. In some cases, the player gets his money back. In other cases, he is paid even money on his bet.

Unlike in pairplus, ante-and-play has a bonus scheme, on top of the payout on the ante, on good hands of cards. The bonus is paid only on the ante bet for players who choose to play, regardless if the dealer qualifies or if a player wins or loses.
